Twin Ponds Soccer Field Improvements

Status
As of May 2008
Phase: Construction
Construction began on April 14th. Field preparation and grading is underway and demolition of the old field drainage system is nearly complete. The contractor is installing perimeter drains and new under-drains within the new field area. The field preparation work will be complete by the end of June and will make way for the installation of the new synthetic turf. The new field is anticipated to open in September 2008.
Overview & History
In May 2006, Shoreline voters approved a bond issue to acquire park property and improve parks throughout the community. One element of that bond was to make improvements to Twin Ponds soccer field. Improvements include installation of synthetic turf on the sand soccer field, which would improve safety, drainage and surface water quality.
Twin Ponds Park is located in the central portion of the City in the Parkwood neighborhood. The park is irregular in shape and contains two ponds, wetland, recreational facilities, and a natural area with a stream. The neighborhood surrounding the park consists primarily of single-family homes with an assisted living center located across the street to the east.
This park was originally referred to as South Central Park by King County. The name was changed to Twin Ponds at some point, likely named after the two ponds that are the dominant feature of the park. In the 1940s and 1950s the property was mined for peat.
