Code Enforcement
Shoreline has adopted rules and regulations designed to ensure safe and attractive neighborhoods. The City's Code Compliance and Enforcement Program helps by enforcing these rules and regulations in a responsible, fair, courteous and impartial manner.
Individuals can register complaints through the City of Shoreline's Customer Response Team by calling (206) 546-1700. The City of Shoreline views each investigation as an opportunity to inform residents, work on resolutions and achieve compliance. The City is unable to pursue anonymous complaints with the exception of health and safety issues. Your name, address, and telephone number are essential to a successful investigation, but you may indicate if you do not wish to have your name disclosed.
Below are some of the typical complaints the City of Shoreline receives.
Litter on private property: Dumpsters overflowing with garbage; illegal dumping of garbage; litter strewn; illegal placement of flyers.
Construction Codes: Permits for building and/or mechanical work; swimming pool and spa installations; clearing & grading; abandoned and dangerous buildings; swimming pool and spa fence enclosures; housing code violations.
Duplexes/Boarding Houses: Single-family residences used as illegal duplexes or for independent room rentals. The Development Code permits eight unrelated adults as a single housekeeping unit.
Environmental:Unlawful activities within a critical area such as a wetland, stream, steep slope or erosion-prone area or the buffer area of same.
Fences: Illegal fence height, placement, and type.
Home Businesses: Businesses conducted in a residence may require a Home Occupation permit (exemptions are home businesses without outside employees and no exterior indications of business being conducted).
Junk Vehicles: Vehicles on private property that meet state criteria for being a junk vehicle, i.e., flat tire, extensive damage, missing major parts.
Land Use: Violations of zoning and development regulations.
Noise: Illegal construction or other noise (limited by hours and days of work).
Nuisances: Accumulations of trash, appliances, nuisance vegetation, debris and junk on private property.
Recreational Vehicles, Boats, Trailers: Violations of storage restrictions on residential property.
Signs: Most new signs must be approved by the City. Temporary and A-board signs are permitted only in special circumstances for a limited period of time.
